Code Purple: Day Two

If I held you,
so small in my hand
so drowned in your ark–
could we apprehend the sea
with glass, mouth, hurt
wrenched cogs,
a dead end for lovers
poised for loss.

To remove you,
moment by moment
from this life—
would cost one thousand
wringing of hands,
spitting of words,
a lifetime of goodbyes
within me.
